Clear Channel execs are excited about the launch of iheartradio, an application that lets its audiences access its terrestrial and Internet radio streams on the iPhone or iPod touch.

Evan Harrison, president of Clear Channel's Online Music & Radio unit, wrote to radio management colleagues this week in a memo that was shared with reporters:

"Our streaming ads carry through on the iPhone (and) the audience is measured via Ando, our third-party metrics provider. Album art and song lyrics accompany the music. It is a free, one-time download via the iPhone App Store and iTunes Now."

A consumer needs an Apple iPhone, iPhone 3G or iPod touch running iPhone OS 2.0.2 or later, and needs to be connected to a data network, either AT&T's cell network or a WiFi connection, he said. "From time to time you may experience outages or spotty reception on the cellular connection, WiFi is the preferred way to stream music on the iPhone — this is not exclusive to our application."

Terrestrial stations offered so far are 10 major outlets in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, Washington, Boston and Minneapolis, plus two Internet radio stations, erockster and Pride Radio.

The company plans to add more stations each week.
