Digital Local Radio Advances in Norway

The Norwegian Post and Telecommunications Authority, Post- og teletilsynet, and the Norwegian Media Authority, Medietilsynet, announced that they would assign frequency permits and concessions for digital local radio station trials.
According to reports, the regulators will allocate the permits in a nationwide frequency block, which comprises 37 regions throughout mainland Norway. The concessions and permits will be valid from Jan. 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2016. Regular broadcasting is then scheduled to commence on Jan. 1, 2017, before which new permits and concessions will be announced.
Post- og teletilsynet and Medietilsynet say they will allocate the frequency permit and concession together in each region, and that local affiliation is not required. And while there is no limit to the amount of permits and concessions applicants can request, a bank guarantee of 50,000 Norwegian kroner is required for each region in which applicants wish to operate.
Applications and bank guarantees should be submitted by 14:00 CET on Aug. 31.
