NHK Wins International Emmy
|
Japanese public broadcaster NHK will be honored on Nov. 19 with an International Emmy in the news category.
NHK won the award for “Great East Japan Earthquake Emergency News,” its coverage of the largest earthquake in the country’s history, which occurred on March 11, 2011.
NHK’s team began its coverage within 90 seconds of the catastrophe, utilizing all of its TV channels and radio stations to keep the public informed about evacuation information and disaster updates. The broadcaster continued round the clock coverage on its primary channel for the eight days following the event.
This award is not the broadcaster’s first International Emmy; in 2011, it received recognition for its coverage of the Chilean mine disaster.
NHK reaches approximately 50 million households throughout Japan through its four broadcast channels.
