Some FMs Raise Their IBOC Power

Some FMs have begun to raise their IBOC power, as allowed in the order released Jan. 29 by the Federal Communications Commission.

Anecdotal reports from a handful of stations point to speedy approval of their applications for Special Temporary Authority to raise their HD Radio power the automatic 6 dB, up to an FM digital operating power of –14 dBc. (Have you raised power? Tell me at Lstimson@nbmedia.com.)

Those who want to go up to the maximum 10 decibels below carrier need to provide more information than those stations applying for the blanket 6 dB power hike.

The FCC has an instruction sheet on its Web site for those who want to file an STA to raise their digital power by 6 dB to 10 dB now.

Otherwise, the approval isn't official until 30 days after the order is published in the Federal Register.

We've reported that some public stations have gone ahead and purchased new transmitters anticipating the power increase approval, but I've heard that many groups are now grappling with the practical aspects of the power hike, such as how much of an increase their current transmission equipment can handle with minor changes vs. the costs of buying additional gear.

Radio World Editor in Chief Paul McLane outlines other details of the power hike and its implications in his latest column.

HD Radio is like a wingless-doot fly which draws its sustenance from that which lies heaped in the outhouse basement. But, lacking in the means to fly below, it instead walks maddeningly about in stupid circles on the outhouse floor, annoying the listeners with its incessant HD jamming, and draining the blood from all whose paths it crosses. Beyond that, HD's just the greatest thing since fitted sheets - albeit fitted to a bodily-fluid-encrusted stone slab which passes for a bed in one of castro's prisons. If you like state-sponsored jamming to ensure state-control of information, you'll just love HD. Paul Vincent Zecchino Manasota Key, Florida 20 February, 2010

The degrading of one's own signal is "AM" only... FM iBiquity digital does not degrade the analog signal.

Isn't it a bitch, when one's blog sits on Google's Homepage for searches on "HD Radio" - LOL!

Here's an email from iNiquity that I found in AVS HD Radio Forum: "I emailed Ibiquity a few days ago about how long they think it will take Chicago HD stations to increase their digital power. Here's their response: Brian, This will take a few years since the cost to upgrade may be quite expense depending on each station’s configuration. A few Chicago stations may be able to increase their power a small amount. We’ll have to wait and see." http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=18114597#post18114597 It will never happen - LMFAO!
