Seems like every NAB Show has a new catchword or phrase that seeks to describe some growing phenomenon or approaching behavioral change in the mediascape. Perhaps the word this year will be “transmedia.”
Allegedly coined by University of Southern California Professor Henry Jenkins, the word will be the topic of a Super Session, “Transmedia: Telling the Story Through Narrative Content, Games and Real-World Adventures,” April 11, 2:30–3:30 p.m. Prof. Jenkins will be the moderator.
Panelists will include Hollywood A-List producer Gale Anne Hurd (“Terminator” films and many more), producer, writer and game developer Danny Bilson (“The Rocketeer”), TV producer Tim Kring (“Crossing Jordan,” “Heroes”), TV producer Kim Moses (“Profiler,” “Ghost Whisperer”) and TV producer Jeff Gomez. While most of the panel looks to be film and TV producers, they have also worked as writers or producers, adapting projects from other mediums or porting films or TV projects into other media.
A release helpfully explains that the session “will explore how to create an immersive and expansive cross-platform entertainment experience. Citing examples from recent and upcoming feature films, TV, ARG, video games and location-based projects, panelists will examine the necessary ingredients of a fertile transmedia property, the impact of video games and multiplayer participation on storytelling and the need for fresh creative skill sets and new forms of collaboration.”
