WLEN, KGO and KFI Are Service to America Winners
|
The NAB Education Foundation announced winners of the ninth Service to America Awards. They will be honored in June at a ceremony in Washington saluting community service by local broadcasters.
The Service to Children Award goes to WLEN(FM) in Adrian, Mich., owned by Lenawee Broadcasting, honored for a variety of public service campaigns and programs, including station internships for high school students and sponsorship of a daily 90-minute elementary school broadcast.
ABC/Disney station KGO(AM) in San Francisco is recognized with the Partnership Award along with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. KGO has raised $14.5 million for the society through a Radio Cure-A-Thon which last year raised $1.3 million in 24 hours.
Clear Channel’s KFI(AM) in Burbank, Calif., will receive the Friend in Need Award. “During the Esperanza Fire, one of the worst fires in the history of Southern California,” the organizers wrote, “KFI(AM) provided round-the-clock-local news coverage and updates. After the deaths of five U.S. Forest Service firefighters the station held a fundraiser and raised more than $75,000 in aid to assist their families.”
